The 28-year-old founder works with clients who are focusing on carving out a community and sharing a story on social media — something that everyone is doing these days, of course. Hansen has found that brands need a lot of help. “For a lot of brands, it’s uncharted territory. They’re not coming to us with visuals or strategy. They’re looking for someone who they can simply hire as an expert,” she said.

Day in the life: How Birchbox’s community manager responds to 200 customers a day

Birchbox aims for a 100-percent response rate on its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube accounts, which the company’s community manager, Kirby Reynolds, is in charge of. Throughout the day, she said she probably gets close to 200 social media interactions, ranging from a quick Instagram like to solving a customer issue. The most important part of her job? Staying positive. “Negativity on our channels doesn’t bring me down,” she said. “For me, it’s a chance to reassure the customer.”
